2015 Historic Douglas County Calendar

Historic Douglas County’s calendar for 2015 is the final calendar in the tradition of celebrating historic themes that contributed to the shaping and culture of Douglas County. This is the last calendar that will be produced by Historic Douglas County, Inc. on an annual basis and is truly a limited, collector’s item. The historic calendar for 2015 presents Ranchers of Early Douglas County.

Ranchers of Early Douglas County is an educational trip of the settling of Douglas County and the building of its initial agricultural farming and ranching base that became the economic bedrock from which Douglas County grew. Each month of 2015, the calendar focuses on a community settlement area within Douglas County, the area known by a name that perhaps is not necessarily know by present day residents …names of areas like Glen Grove, Cherry Valley and Rockridge. Within each area two early ranchers are identified and briefly profiled. The profiles of the early ranchers are widely varied, not focusing on just the most successfully ranchers but on a representative cross section of ranchers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries The picture painted by each month attempts to provide a range of how ranch life was in the early years after immigrants settled in this bountiful and sometimes very tough land we know as Douglas County, Colorado. Some ranchers were highly successful …others eked out a living, prosperous enough to raise their families. Some early ranches experienced tremendous hardships …in some cases, ranchers and their families lost their lives in their attempt to conquer the land. Welcome to the time travel trip back into the early years of Douglas County and meet the Ranchers of Early Douglas County.
