Historic Douglas County, Inc.
2017 Book – Calendar
The Douglas County Historic Calendar 2015 ended the production of annual historic wall-calendars by Historic Douglas County, Inc. (HDC). In 2016, HDC began the production of a new, educational concept, of telling the story of the history of Douglas County, a “Book-calendar.” The first edition of a five year series, “In the Beginning” was an amazing success. Starting from the end of the Ice Age to 1870, the 2016 book-calendar led the series to this second, 2017 book-calendar edition, “The Early Years“, 1870-1900.
This second, 2017 book-calendar edition of the five years series takes the reader into the era of the transition of transportation from trails to roads and from wagons to trains. The era winds into statehood, County boundary changes and a new county seat. New industries begin and mining becomes a very big business. The era teems with agricultural growth and dairies and cattle cover the landscape. The County nurtures new social growth and the coalescing of pioneering settlements. Movers and shakers shape local government and start moving the County toward what it has become today. America’s Spanish American impacts the County and influence beyond its County boundaries changes the the County looks at the world and the way the world impacts the County …opening a window to “A New World,” the next era that will be explored in 2018’s book-calendar (1900-1930).
The book-calendar series moves deep into the overall history of Douglas County. With the inclusion of the citations of research used in producing this book-calendar document along with the well-written pieces about the major influences in the County’s growth during these eras, the book-calendar series is an educational piece for the general public and is being used by educators as an educational resource.
