Recommended Reading

Historic Douglas County, Inc. (HDC) has identified books specific to Douglas County and surrounding areas, including some Colorado books that provide insight to the geological formation of the area. Many of these books may be available at your library and some may be found at your local bookstores. Many of the books specific to Douglas County are out of print and only available on the secondary market. To assist you in locating the identified books, we have provided two options in the form of website links: The Douglas County Libraries and Amazon.com. Obviously, the two potential sources that we have identified are not the only sources and you likely can find them from several sources. However, the Douglas County Libraries are an excellent source if you wish to borrow the book, and Amazon.com is one of the sources if you wish to purchase a copy of the recommended reading book. Amazon.com generally provides books by a book-condition basis, “Used,” “New” and “Collectible” which allows you to choose the category of book that you wish to purchase. HDC receives no remuneration from Amazon for purchases of books on their website and all transactions are between you, the buyer, and Amazon.com.

Please note that the number of books on shelves at Douglas County Libraries as well as “in-stock” at Amazon.com is dynamic and constantly changes. HDC attempts to check the website links to the Libraries and Amazon periodically to assure they are valid; however, since we do not have a constant monitor on these sites, you might encounter a “Out-of-stock” or “Not Stocked” situation.

Cheyenne War Indian Raids on the Roads to Denver Cheyenne War: Indian Raids on the Roads to Denver, 1864-1869

This is a good general Colorado history book providing in depth insight to Colorado’s early years. Amazon says, “Author Jeff Broome has done a marvelous job of mining documents filed under the Indian depredation claims system a federal Indian policy intending to preserve peace on the frontiers by allowing white settlers and Indians, alike, to file claims for the wrongs done by each other. The policy, the federal government hoped, would prevent frontier retaliations and violence. It failed miserably, but the resulting claims reveal nearly a century s worth of previously unheard white voices describing the horrors of Indian-white conflict. Broome focuses on the roads to Denver, 1864 1869. His engaging reconstruction of this era and place, as seen through the lens of white frontiersmen and women, will inspire other researchers to don miner s helmets and descend into this mother lode of heretofore-neglected historical evidence.
